1 September, 2005

An AIDWA delegation comprising of its Gen. Secretary Sudha Sundararaman, Vice Presidents Brinda Karat (MP) and Pramila Pandhe, and Legal Convenor Kirti Singh met the Petroleum Minister Shri Mani Shankar Aiyar today and handed over a memorandum on the issue of inadequacy of kerosene and gas supply. They highlighted the vulnerability of the majority of women to any increase in prices. ( The detailed memorandum is attached ) The Minister explained the steps being taken to address the issues raised, and discussed the problems arising out of the large scale diversion of kerosene. He endorsed the demand for setting up of vigilance committees to monitor supply and distribution particularly of kerosene, and suggested that AIDWA should play a proactive role on such committees, along with other people's representatives. He assured the delegation that he would examine the other demands carefully and would take suitable action.
