ON ATTEMPTS TO IMPOSE DRESS CODE ON TEACHER IN WEST BENGAL

30th July 2010

The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), strongly condemns the attempt to impose a dress code on a teacher, Ms. Shirin Middya, in the Aliah Muslim University, Kolkata by some members of the Students Union.  Ms Middya has not been able to take her classes for several months now because of her refusal to wear the burqa that the students’ group is insisting on.

The AIDWA President Ms. Subhashini Ali spoke to the Minister for Minority Affairs, Government of W Bengal, Shri Abdus Sattar, who informed that the W. Bengal Government has already intervened in the matter, on the basis of Ms Middya’s complaint. Measures are being taken to ensure that there is no imposition of a dress code in the University, and a meeting is being called by the university authorities to make this clear to the teachers and students.

AIDWA appreciates the courageous stand taken by Ms Shirin Middya on this issue and expresses its solidarity with her.
