A press statement was issued by the AIDWA National President Shyamali Gupta, and General Secretary Sudha Sundararaman, the West Bengal President Sabitri Majumdar and General Secretary Minoti Ghosh on 19th February 2012 condemning the grievous gang rape of a woman in Park Street, Kolkata, and demanding the immediate arrest and stringent punishment of the culprits.
The statement also pointed out that after the Trinamul-Congress alliance government assumed power in the state, the incidents of attack on the common people, along with women has increased manifold. They expressed deep concern about the lack of security for women. AIDWA is shocked by the comments of the Chief Minister, Ms. Mamta Bannerjee, who had claimed that the incident was “fabricated to embarrass her”, and Cabinet Minister Madan Mitra who had sought to blame the victim, instead of taking swift action to ensure that justice was done. The leadership demanded that stringent administrative steps should be taken against those police officers and police personnel who were involved in insulting the rape victim, and delaying the due process of law.
A rally was organized by West Bengal unit of AIDWA on 21st Feb 2012 highlighting this issue.
