The Young Women’s Sub-Committee of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has held three meetings of young girls in Avantika, Nandnagari, and Lakshmi Nagar, as part of its campaign “Pass the BILL, because ‘HONOUR’ kills”. The meetings were addressed by Aruna, Rekha Verma and Harleen Kaur of the YWSC.
The meetings were told that, the number of crimes that are committed against young couples in the name of honour are increasing. AIDWA has drawn up draft bill to comprehensively address such crimes and had been demanding for its enactment for a long time. But the vote bank politics of successive governments at centre have prevented them from even recognizing these killings as crimes and enactment of the law has been deferred.
The campaign was launched on 23rd July to take the struggle to the masses and build a pressure on the government to enact the law without delay. A facebook page titled “Pass the Bill, because “Honour” kills” has also been created to reach out to the youth.
As part of the next phase of the campaign, a workshop of cultural activists from different states is being planned in Delhi. And, colleges across states are being approached to organize dialogues around the issue. The campaign will continue at various levels until the demand is not achieved and AIDWA appeals to the people to firmly stand for the enactment of this law so that the fundamental rights and lives of our young couples are no longer sacrificed to the false notion of honour.
