AIDWA has called this public meeting at Jantar Mantar on 19th December 2015, day on which we annually commemorate our founder member and leader Sushila Gopalan, to protest against the rising incidents of threats and attacks against minorities and against upholders of scientific thought like Davolkar, Pansare and Kalburgi.
The fact that all this is being done in the name of a Hindu Rashtra shows that the attack is against the very foundations of our Constitution and our democracy. It is alarming that all that our Prime Minster and the Government are doing about it is either to ignore it or to make public comments calculated to intensify the atmosphere of hatred and violence.
AIDWA feels that the basic premises of equality and freedom of thought and expression on which our Constitution rests are being attacked. To weaken the people’s united struggle against hunger and for our fundamental rights to health, education and livelihood which the Government is under mining severely.
This is why we think the threat is not just against the minorities, but against all fighting for democracy and equal rights. Women have to take a leading role to challenge this threat firstly because they are part of the united struggle for these fundamental rights and secondly because communalism and obscurantism of all kinds target women’s security and dignity in particular.
We call upon all women, indeed all citizens who have respect for democracy, to unite to resist the destruction of our Constitution.
