AIDWA Press Statement on Vrindavan widows

AIDWA condemns the inhuman and irresponsible statement made by the BJP MP from Mathura, Ms. Hema Malini reportedly stating that widows from Bihar and Bengal should not come and settle in Vrindavan.

Widows, just like any other Indian citizens, are entitled to reside wherever they choose. It goes against their constitutional rights to be prevented from coming to Vrindavan, which is considered by many to be a holy city that provides solace and succor to thousands of destitute women. It is the responsibility of the administration, and the elected MP to ensure that these widows who are already facing a loss in their personal lives, and undergoing trauma, are assisted to live secure lives with dignity. The callous attitude of the MP, herself a woman, towards widows is deplorable. We urge that a more just and humane approach be adopted, and the democratic rights of our citizens across states be safeguarded by our elected MPs.
