The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has strongly condemned the repressive measures by the Modi government to stifle voices of dissent in our country. The regularity with which the police under the BJP-RSS regime is lodging cases and incarcerating young journalists, lawyers and activists exposes its authoritarian and fascistic character. Most of those arrested have been arbitrarily picked up by the police without even informing their families. No one, including lawyers were allowed to meet some of the imprisoned activists.
It is shameful that Prime Minister Modi denigrated protestors and activists in the Rajya Sabha exhibiting contempt for all democratic norms during the ongoing Parliament session.
It is shocking that the home ministry stated in the Lok Sabha that the NCRB does not maintain any specific data on arrests and/or detention of ‘civil rights activists’ or journalists. Hence its refusal to give any information on the arrests of activists going on in the country.
AIDWA demands the withdrawal of the cases and the immediate release of Nodeep Kaur, Disha Ravi, Shiv Kumar a Dalit, disabled labour activist and others. Cases against Nikita Jacob, Mandeep Puniya and Kappan Siddique now on bail must also be withdrawn.
