  • Letter to Law Minister on Triple Talaq Bill

    A delegation comprising of P.K Sreemathi (M.P Loksabha),  Sudha Sundararaman    (Vice-President) , Kirti Singh (Legal Convenor, AIDWA)  S.Punyavathi (Vice-President) ,  Tapasi Praharaj (National Secretary) , Asha Sharma  (General Secretary, Delhi JMS)    Maimoona Mollah   (President, Delhi JMS) met the Law Minister and submitted a memorandum regarding the Bill of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2017, bringing to his attention the concerns of various women’s organizations and individuals about it.

    The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) expresses its disappointment with the anti-people budget presented today by the Finance Minister Shri Arun Jaitley on behalf of the Modi-led NDA government. Since this is the final full budget of this government before the elections of 2019, it is based on high rhetoric and overestimated projections of growth revenue. However, the pro-corporate, anti-poor, neo-liberal policies adopted by the current regime which is reflected in this budget has resulted in job losses and penury for majority of the population.

    It has been reported in the media that the Union Cabinet has approved a bill making it a criminal offence to pronounce Triple Talaq apart from some other provisions. The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) condemns the hasty and extremely undemocratic manner in which the bill is being sought to be passed in the Parliament without any public discussion and discussion with women’s organizations and groups working with issues related to Muslim women.

    The shocking case of the harassment and life threatening assault on the Swedish couple, Quentin Jeremy and Marie who were visiting Fatehpur Sikri as part of their private trip to India is strongly condemnable. The couple were stalked for one hour and beaten with sticks in a manner that they sustained fractures and serious internal injuries. It should be noted that Fatehpur Sikri is a busy tourist spot and the lack of the presence of any security has been evident in this incident.

    The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) condemns the brutal police violence perpetrated on all students, majority of which are girls, by the authorities of the Banares Hindu University (BHU). The students were protesting the molestation of a girl student from the department of fine arts by three men on a motorcycle just outside the university campus day before yesterday. In response to the complaint of the student, the university authorities displayed their utter insensitivity by blaming the girl for not keeping to hostel timings.

    The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) expresses its concern about the recent case of Akhila Asokan, a 24 year old adult girl from Kerala who married a Muslim man of her own choice. The Kerala High Court shockingly annulled her consensual marriage and sent her back to the custody of her parents on May 24, 2017, upon the plea made by the latter - which in itself was a highly patriarchal and legally unsound judgement.

    AIDWA strongly condemns the heinous and cold blooded murder of senior journalist and activist, Gauri Lankesh, outside her house in RR Nagar, Bengaluru, on September 5th 2017. She was shot at close range multiple times, and died instantly from the bullet wounds inflicted on her. The unidentified perpetrators of this planned shooting, who are suspected to have come on a motorbike, were able to make a quick getaway.  Such a serious crime being committed in the capital city of Bengaluru is alarming and outrageous.

  • On the Court Verdict in the Rape Case against the Dera Sacha Sauda chief

    The special CBI court in Panchkula, Haryana, has convicted the Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in the charge of rape of two sadhvis, in a case that was registered in 2002. This verdict has sparked off widespread violence and rioting in Haryana, Punjab, Delhi and parts of Uttar Pradesh, leading to the unfortunate death of over 30 people and injuries to hundreds.
