AIDWA is deeply disturbed by the remarks made by Justice N. Kirubakaran, High Court Judge, Tamil nadu, that once again blames the victim of violence for sexual crimes being perpetrated against her. While the feudal and patriarchal mindset is widely prevalent in society, to have a senior judge echo such regressive sentiments has severe repercussions on women’s rights to equality, as enshrined in our constitution. It also impacts negatively on her right to a life without violence at all times, in all situations, wherever she may be, whatever she may be doing, in a context where women are coming into public life in many capacities. The Tamil Nadu unit of AIDWA has taken up the issue with the learned judge. We endorse the enclosed statement, and urge that the injustice being done to women across the country through such remarks be remedied effectively.
