The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) strongly condemns the decision of the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University in Bareilly, UP denying permission to the 23 year old victim in the Chinmayanand rape case to sit for her LLM’s third semester examination. The University has stated that the victim does not have the required 75 percent attendance and will therefore not be able to take her exams. It has asked her to get a court order to appear for the exams.
This decision has been taken by the University despite the court of CJM granting permission to the law student to appear for her exams and has instructed the jail superintendent to send the woman to Bareilly in police custody.
AIDWA notes with concern that the University has chosen to ignore the circumstances under which the victim has a shortage of attendance. It reminds the authorities that the way in which the sordid case has been handled, has resulted in the harassment of the girl who has been under arrest since October 20. The unfortunate decision to deny her permission to appear for the exam will have an extremely adverse impact on her life and career.
AIDWA demands that the UP Government direct the University and the Jail Administration to ensure that she is allowed to sit for her exams as per the Court orders.
