AIDWA expresses its deep grief at the sudden demise of Dr. Amit Sen Gupta, on 28.11.2018 at 60 years of age. He was a comrade, a friend of AIDWA, and a person committed to gender equality in concept and practice. He played a key role in building up the science movement and the people’s health movement in India. As the convenor of the Jan Swasthya Abhiyan, he had encouraged and helped AIDWA to take part in the activities of the network, so as to strengthen its interventions on health issues. He has contributed articles to “ Women’s Equality” which helped AIDWA gain an understanding of developments in the health sector, and a proper perspective on the changing Government policies. His writings also sharply critiqued the growing trend towards irrational and unscientific thinking under the present dispensation. Above all, Dr. Amit Sen Gupta was able to combine activism with professional expertise, and was able to bring together many health organizations to work unitedly on issues of common interest.
AIDWA extends heartfelt condolences to his wife and son. His death is a great loss for the democratic and health movement in the country. His wittiness, and his infectious smile will be sorely missed.
