AIDWA strongly condemns the police brutality and atrocities on the peaceful march of Left students and youth from Singur to Nabanno which was scheduled on 12th and 13th September. All the left students’ and youth organisations of W. Bengal gave the call for a united march to demand jobs for youth, and peace in educational institutions. They mobilised thousands of students and youth under this banner, who marched for two days from Singur, the epitome of abandoned industrialisation - to the Chief Minister's office at Nabanno.
While they were proceeding in this protest march, the state police unleashed an unprovoked and brutal lathi charge on them, burst tear gas mixed with a chemical which led to severe choking, and beat up the students and youth mercilessly. Even young girls who took part in the march were not spared, and suffered grievous injuries. State President and Secretary of DYFI, West Bengal and State Secretary SFI have been badly hit on the head. Hundreds of youth were severely hurt and fell senseless under the lathi charge. Many of them have been admitted to Howrah hospital, where the condition of some is critical.
It was once again male police who hit the women in the streets in a barbaric manner. Even after some of the attacked youth started bleeding, they were repeatedly beaten by the police.
Such a brutal and vicious attack on students and youth unleashed by the police in West Bengal has taken place under the aegis of none other than the Chief Minister, Mamta Banerjee, who is in charge of the police force in the state.
AIDWA strongly condemns the unprovoked attack and brutality of the police in these circumstances. We support the just demands raised by the Leftist youth and students of W. Bengal for jobs and education, and stand with them in their struggle.
