Today AIDWA commemorates Nirbhaya, the young girl whose brutal rape and subsequent death in Delhi in 2012 gave rise to a huge public outrage leading to crucial changes in the law against sexual assault. Some of AIDWA's long-standing demands for protection of women against sexual violence found expression in these changes. Others still wait to be addressed. Some of those who had been vociferous in condemning the incident and demanding justice for Nirbhaya then have come to power today. But today they are themselves bent on undermining laws against sexual violence, twisting them in favour of culprits close to the seat of power. Many more Nirbhaya’s continue to cry aloud for justice. AIDWA takes a pledge on this day not to rest until their demand for justice is also fulfilled and sexual violence ceases to be a bane to women irrespective of caste and creed.
