The news of the passing away of Com M C Josephine shocked everyone. She passed away on April 10, 2022 due to a heart attack. She was 74 years old. She was attending the CPI(M) party congress in Kannur. She was a central committee member of the CPI(M).
Com Josephine was born in a traditional Christian family in Vypin Island in Ernakulam district of Kerala. She became an activist since her childhood days. She was a strong opponent of communal forces and challenged their regressive norms. She was attracted to the communist movement as a student in 1978. She completed her degree education at the St Xaviers College at Aluva. She completed her masters in Malayalam from Maharajas College, Ernakulam. She quit her job at Chalakkudy Spencer College and became a whole timer of the Left movement.
Josephine was the Kerala state president of AIDWA from 1997 to 2006. She served as the AIDWA national vice president for many years. She was the chairperson of the Kerala State Women’s Commission from 2017 to 2021 and handled many issues to give relief to women during her tenure.
She was also the secretary of the Warehousing Corporation Employee Union and president of the Private Hospitals Workers Union which were affiliated to the CITU.
She held the post of the chairperson of the Kerala State Women’s Development Corporation Limited and also of the Greater Cochin Development Authority. She was elected councillor of the Angamaly Municipality for 13 years.
She was a good orator and popular among the mass of women.
AIDWA will miss her contributions in discussions on vital women’s issues in the AIDWA central committee of which she continued to be a member till her death.
