Central executive committee of the All India Democratic Women's Association(AIDWA) welcomes the Supreme Court order restraining Haryana government from moving ahead with the Panchayati Raj amendment imposing eligibility criteria of education and other extraneous conditions for contesting Panchayat elcetions.
AIDWA had approached the Supreme Court by filing a writ petition through its activists seeking directions for withdrawal of the amendment as it was exclusive for large number of women, dalits, minorities and poorer people who remained deprived from education and soci-economic upliftment. According to the writ petition the Haryana assembly legislation was tantamount to disenfrenchise majority of the eligible electorate from their constitutional right of contesting Panchayat election.
Supreme Court intervention is a welcome development for safeguarding the fundamental right of the marginalised sections of women taking part in grass root democratic process which the BJP led governmnet of Haryana was bent upon snatching through the draconian measures.
