AIDWA strongly condemns the unrelenting and horrific litany of violence being unleashed by the TMC mafia in W. Bengal, which has led to another ghastly rape and murder of a woman in East Medinipur district on August 18th 2014.
Gitali Giri, wife of Byomkesh Giri of Sunia, Kanthi, East Medinipur, resisted the pressure of local TMC leaders to pay a hefty sum of money so that her husband, who had been ousted from his village for several months by the same leaders may be allowed to return safely. Her body has been found hanging from a tree this morning. Reports coming in from the area reveal that she was stripped and paraded through the village, and also gang-raped under the leadership of 2 local TMC leaders.
Unfortunately, on being approached by the media, the SP of police has said that the body was not found hanging from a tree and the allegation of rape, etc cannot be confirmed until after the postmortem report comes. With implicit support from the authorities, and the ruling party in the state, it is doubtful whether legal action will be taken against the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
AIDWA demands a fair enquiry into the incident, and stringent action against the criminals. A delegation will submit a memorandum to the NCW urging its immediate intervention.
An AIDWA team will be visiting the village tomorrow.
