The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) is shocked at the retrograde comments made by the Kerala Congress chief M M Hassan. He has described menstruation as “impure” while addressing journalism students in a camp organised by the Kerala state youth welfare board. He opined that women should not go to the temples and stay at home as the “menstruation period marks days of impurity”.
While women participants protested and questioned him, the Congress leader stuck to his comments instead of expressing his regrets.
AIDWA is deeply concerned at the anti-women positions taken by our elected representatives. Women are facing the worst kind of attacks in our country today. Incidents of violence against women are increasing at an alarming rate. Such comments will further embolden the regressive feudal and patriarchal forces who are targeting women.
AIDWA condemns such anti-women comments and demands an unconditional apology from M M Hassan.
