The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) expresses deep sorrow at the passing away of Kamala Bhasin. She was 75 years of age. The women and progressive movements have lost one of its committed fighters. She was an activist, writer, poet and singer. She was a strong advocate against patriarchy and questioned its anti-women ideology uncompromisingly. She held many training classes on the issue of women’s equal rights.
An outspoken champion of women’s rights, she helped in building the South Asian Feminist network. She was a key member of the Indo-Pak forum which believed in building relationships and harmony. She was firm in her stands against communalism.
The women’s movement has lost one of the beacons of feminism in India. Paying homage to Kamaladi, we reaffirm our commitment to carry forward the struggle against the onslaught of communalism and the patriarchal ideology with renewed fervour.
