Women’s Organizations Call for Immediate Implementation of Women’s Reservation

The undersigned women’s organizations call for immediate implementation of women’s reservation.

In the special session of Lok Sabha, the delimitation that the BJP led central government was deceitfully attempting under the cover of women’s reservation was rightly defeated in Lok Sabha yesterday.  The rhetoric of “nari shakti” was not convincing because their manuvadi understanding on women does not advocate women’s emancipation – they were only using nari shakti to implement their own political agenda of delimitation. The women’s organizations strongly assert that the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023, passed by Parliament with the support of the opposition, must be implemented without further delay.

It is a matter of serious concern that its implementation has been deliberately linked to the completion of the census and delimitation process. This conditionality effectively postpones women’s rightful political representation and raises questions about the intent of the BJP-led central government. The truth remains that women are still being denied 33% reservation in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.

We, the women’s organizations, recall the historic and relentless struggle by the women’s movement. Veteran leader, Geeta Mukherjee who headed the parliamentary standing committee on women's reservation relentlessly advocated the passage of the bill. It is our collective responsibility to carry forward this legacy and ensure that women’s political rights are not reduced to mere promises and rhetorics.

We demand:

  • Immediate removal of conditions linking implementation to census and delimitation
  • Time-bound implementation of 33% reservation for women
  • Transparent roadmap for execution of the law
  • Democratic consultations with women’s organizations and civil society.

The opposition has consistently supported women’s reservation while opposing attempts to delay it through procedural conditions. The responsibility now lies squarely with the BJP led central government.

The question remains: will the government ensure immediate justice to women, or continue to defer their constitutional rights?

We call upon all democratic forces to intensify the struggle and mobilize across the country for the immediate implementation of women’s reservation.
