    The verdict of the district court, Thodupuzha, Kerala rejecting the petition of Suryanelli victim that Prof.P J Kurien is included as an accused in the case, is very much unfortunate and unjustified.

    Since the rape victim herself has alleged that Kurien was also one of the rapists was not viewed seriously by the court. Circumstantial evidences were there to prove that Mr. Kurien was at that place as alleged by the girl should have been taken into account before final disposal.

The recent heinous rape and murder of 20 year old Shipra Ghosh, in Barasat North 24 Parganas, as also the rape and murder of a 14 year old girl in Gede, Nadia district, have caused deep consternation among the common people.

The office was attacked and she was dragged out to the street. She was physically assaulted and humiliated in the most shameful ways.

    AIDW AIDWA notes with disappointment that the Criminal Law Amendment Bill, 2013 passed by the UPA Government in the Lok Sabha today to amend the rape laws has not taken into consideration the objections and issues that have been repeatedly raised by AIDWA and other women's organizations. We reiterate that the opportunity to provide comprehensive justice for women who have been subjected to sexual violence should not be lost, and call for their inclusion even at this stage.     AIDWA is deeply disappointed by the UPA Government’s decision to refer the Criminal Law Amendment Bill to a Group of Ministers after the Union Cabinet meeting held on March 12th failed to evolve a consensus. This failure represents a step backwards in the process of bringing in a more comprehensive and effective legislation to address the crime of rape and sexual assault, on a priority basis.
