AIDWA welcomes the verdict of the Supreme Court in the Suryanelli case. The Kerala State unit of AIDWA has been involved with the case from the very beginning. Unfortunately, the UDF Govt. behaved in a rather partisan manner which was responsible for the fact that of the 40 accused, only one was sentenced.

AIDWA welcomes the Verma Committee recommendations submitted to the Govt on Jan 23^rd 2013, and calls upon the Government to accept and implement the recommendations without any delay. The report is comprehensive, and has pointed to the failure of governance as the root cause of crimes against women. The Committee has made wide ranging suggestions including proposals to tackle the multiple sources of discrimination and inequality affecting women.

The All India Democratic Women’s Association expresses its concern and deep sense of outrage over two incidents reported from Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. In the first, the District Judge of Gonda has been accused by two women, one a minor, of molestation in his chamber when they were called by him to speak about their having been abducted.

One month after the horrific Delhi gangrape, the Central and State Governments are yet to learn any lessons. This is shown by the refusal to pinpoint accountability and responsibility for those responsible. Top police officials including the Police Commissioner and those heading the Transport Ministry in Delhi should have been acted against. Why has the Central Government and the Sheila Dikshit Government not acted?
Protest dharna by the national women’s organizations

On the third day of the protest dharna by the national women’s organizations including AIDWA, AIDMAM, JMS Delhi, YWCA, CBCI Women, GOS, Saheli, Prabhat Tara, Himmat, NFIW, BGVS Samata, etc. extended support to rape survivors , and resolved to carry the fight for justice forward.

A public protest at Jantar Mantar by a broad platform comprising of national women’s organisations and groups expressed solidarity with rape survivors from Haryana on January 13. The meeting highlighted the complete lack of follow up in the concerned cases by the state government. Testimonies from the survivors and their families are being presented over the course of the three day solidarity meeting beginning on January 13^th..
AIDWA STRONGLY CONDEMNS ARBITRARY INCREASE IN RAIL FARES

AIDWA strongly condemns the totally unnecessary and arbitrary increase in rail fares by the UPA Government on Jan 13^th, 2013, which will come into force from the midnight of Jan 21-22^nd. The sharp increase in second class fares by 15-40%, and sleeper fares by 13-34% will further burden the ordinary people, who are already suffering from the steep increase in the prices of all other essential commodities.
