    A delegation comprising of Ms. Brinda Karat, Ms. Sudha Sundararaman, and Dr. Sabu George met the Health Secretary on April 17th, 2013, and submitted a petition highlighting the poor implementation of the PNDT Act, in a situation where the child sex ratios are falling to alarmingly low levels in many states.

    The AIDWA and NFIW deplore and condemn the attack on Minati Ghosh, State Secretary of the Ganatantrik Mahila Samity in West Bengal and former Minister in the Left Front Government by TMC goons when she was attending to her work in the office in South Dinajpur. The office was attacked and she was dragged out to the street. She was physically assaulted and humiliated in the most shameful ways.

    AIDW AIDWA notes with disappointment that the Criminal Law Amendment Bill, 2013 passed by the UPA Government in the Lok Sabha today to amend the rape laws has not taken into consideration the objections and issues that have been repeatedly raised by AIDWA and other women's organizations. We reiterate that the opportunity to provide comprehensive justice for women who have been subjected to sexual violence should not be lost, and call for their inclusion even at this stage. Some of the objections to the Bill are as under:

    AIDWA is deeply disappointed by the UPA Government’s decision to refer the Criminal Law Amendment Bill to a Group of Ministers after the Union Cabinet meeting held on March 12th failed to evolve a consensus. This failure represents a step backwards in the process of bringing in a more comprehensive and effective legislation to address the crime of rape and sexual assault, on a priority basis.

    AIDWA and NFIW strongly condemn the diktat of the grand Mufti of J&K issued on 3rd Feb 2013 banning the All Girls Rock Band of Kashmir saying singing is un-Islamic. We assert that women’s Constitutional rights cannot be restricted by patriarchal and conservative mind sets operating in the name of religion, especially a religion which places women in high esteem.
